ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:

The suburban backyard is an American original—an invention so familiar it hardly seems invented at all. Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition, explores the mid-century backyard from the dramatic rise of home ownership and the development of the suburbs to the beauty of postwar garden design and the birth of the environmental movement.

Filled with vintage photographs, historic drawings, and period advertisements, the exhibition reveals how the suburban backyard became such an integral part of American pop culture. Cape Fear Museum is excited to host this exhibition from March 18 to August 27, 2017.
