Once considered an essential part of a wardrobe, the fashion hat has experienced a steady decline in popularity since the 1960s. Today, many people associate stylish hats only with a Sunday church service or a special event.
This selection of hats reflects a number of the popular styles worn in the Cape Fear area from the 1940s through the 1960s.
There are over 300 hats and caps in Cape Fear Museum’s permanent collection. Women’s fashion hats make up the majority, followed by baseball-style caps and the man’s very formal top hat.
